Exploration and adventure have long held a prominent place in my life … childhood experiences helped define a relationship with wild places, forming a deeply embedded and intertwined connection.

I was therefore delighted when asked if I would contribute to the ‘International Handbook of Women and Outdoor Learning.’

Edited by A/Professor Tonia Gray, Western Sydney University and Professor Denise Mitten, Prescott University, Arizona this new book presents a collection of essays from women globally who live, work and participate in outdoor learning environments.

My chapter, ‘The Soloists Journey as a Window to Wisdom’, explores the importance of the solo journey as an avenue for connecting with one’s own intuition and building personal resilience. This essay traverses the emotional and cultural awakening and resilience that was built, as I journeyed alone, from London to the chaos of Mumbai, overland to Kathmandu, and by foot high up into the Himalaya. I also wrote several of the section introductions throughout the book.

But this is not just a handbook for those hankering after a rugged life. The book presents a feast of experiences, reflections, observations and insight into women’s contribution to the outdoor learning environment – providing inspiration for all and encouraging greater inclusivity for women in this space.
